The difference
A typist, or a clerk you speak to
A good typing service brings an experienced typist's judgment, and pay-per-minute pricing suits a practice that records rarely. That is a real strength, and for verbatim transcription of a hearing or meeting it is still the right tool.
The structure is the difference. A typing service is a team working through recordings in turn, during its working hours, paid by the minute, and a person outside your practice hears each one. Clerk& returns your own words, set out in your own style, moments after you stop recording, at any hour, for one flat monthly price. You or your secretary review every document before it goes out.
Questions
Common questions
What are the alternatives to a legal typing service in Ireland?
There are four: keep a legal secretary in-house, use a typing service (TranScribe, VOS, My Secretary, Type Assist, Amanuscribe and others), type it yourself or with speech recognition such as Dragon, or use speech-to-document software such as Clerk&, which turns what you say into a ready-to-review document in moments for a flat monthly price.
How much does legal typing cost in Ireland?
Published prices checked on 30 October 2026: TranScribe sells 100-minute bundles from €220 plus VAT (about €2.20 a minute); Amanuscribe charges €1.35 a minute pay-as-you-go or €10 a month plus €1.00 a minute, plus VAT. VOS, My Secretary and Type Assist do not publish prices. Clerk& is €69 per user per month plus VAT on the early-adopter rate, with ten hours of recording included.
How quickly do Irish typing services return work?
Of the services above, Type Assist publishes 4, 24 or 48-hour options and Amanuscribe publishes 2 business days, or 1 with High Priority. TranScribe, VOS and My Secretary do not publish a turnaround. Clerk& returns a document moments after you stop recording, at any hour.
Is a typing service or Clerk& better for confidential work?
Reputable Irish typing services work under confidentiality terms and GDPR, and TranScribe states it keeps data on encrypted servers in Ireland. The structural difference is that a typist outside your practice hears each recording. With Clerk&, processing is automated, all matter content is processed and stored in the EEA and never trains any model, and a signed Article 28 data-processing agreement is available.
When is a typing service still the right choice?
When you record rarely, when you want a person's judgment on every document, or when you need verbatim transcription of a hearing or meeting rather than a document in your own words. Clerk& is for the everyday flow of fee notes, attendance notes and letters. The 14-day free trial is the fair way to compare: run a real week of work through both.
